I think it is long overdue that I introduce you all to my Scottish branch which begins with my 6x great-grandparents Robert Thomson, ship carpenter, and Margaret Cargill. Scottish records are without question the most organised and detailed records you will ever come across.

Robert and Margaret had one son who was also called Robert, and my 5x great-grandfather, on 178th December 1784 in Wemyss, Fife. Robert Jnr (seaman) did stay in Wemyss as his marriage to Margaret Leitch (1785-1865) on 1st December 1812 is registered there. They eventually moved to Burntisland, Fife where they had 7 children:

1.     Janet Thomson b. 15th September 1813

2.     Margaret Thomson b. 30th April 1816, m. Andrew Gilmour c.1836 and d. 12th February 1889 in Burntisland, Fife. They had 13children all of whom were born in Burntisland.

3.     Barbara Thomson b. 30th April 1816

4.     Robert Thomson b. 17th November 1820, m. Catherine Morrison on 26th January 1845. They had one daughter Margaret Leitch Thomson b. 4th July 1845, she married a Joseph Barckwich on 22 January 1866in Leith, Midlothian

5.     Peter Thomson b. 9th October 1822

6.     Thomas Thomson b. 28th September 1828

7.     James Thomson (4x great-grandfather, Blacksmith) b. 1st May1831, m. Elizabeth Carstairs on 16th July 1855 in Edinburgh, Midlothian and d. 18th August 1882 in Kinghorn, Fife from stomach cancer. They had 10 children.

Merchant seamen records suggest that Robert did do some form of military service before his death on 21st February 1859in Burntisland, Fife.

Peter worked as a riveter in Scotland before moving to Belfast so he could work in the shipyards. He and his wife Jessie had eight children, seven of whom were born in Kinghorn, Fife with the exception of the youngest who was born in Middlesex, England
